The Kansas City Chiefs are teasing that Patrick Mahomes has a new throw in his arsenal, but really it’s one that he’s been perfecting over the years.
Mahomes was first spotted working on a behind-the-back pass during training camp in 2020. In 2021, Mahomes was seen practicing the same behind-the-back throw. Last year’s training camp was no different, but he hasn’t yet used the pass during the course of a game.
Mahomes spoke a bit about the pass on FOX Sports’ “First Things First” ahead of Super Bowl LVII.
“It’s for sure going to happen at some point in a game,” Mahomes said. “I’m not going to say that it’s going to happen in a Super Bowl, but I actually do it in practice a good amount. I throw it and complete probably like 80-90% of the time. I’m a little too scared still to do it in the game.”
Mahomes has previously suggested that it has to be the right conditions for him to attempt the behind-the-back pass in the game, just as he needs the right conditions for his left-handed passes or no-look passes. But perhaps he’ll succumb to peer pressure in 2023.
“Travis (Kelce) gives me crap for it whenever I do it in practice,” Mahomes said. “He always yells, ‘Do it in the game!’”
